2016 is our best opportunity at breaking a broken system

This election, everywhere you look, the majority of people are saying the same thing.

"It's either Hillary or Trump, and both suck."

But why?  Why does that HAVE to be true?

Can't we just say... No?

Can't we use this as a chance to break away from a two party system?  Aren't we doing a disservice to our nation by forever limiting ourself by saying it's either Republican or Democrat?

We're so convinced anything else is "throwing our vote away."  Because currently, and unfortunately, it's true.

This would be the perfect opportunity to show that when both candidates are terrible choices, we don't have to pick either.

This election is like the episode of The Simpsons where the choices for President were two tyrannical aliens bent on world domination.

When declaring he'd break away from the traditional two-party system and vote for a third party candidate, one of the aliens stated:

"Go ahead!  Throw your vote away!"

If we know both choices are the wrong ones, and we have the capacity to make a third option...

Why don't we?

7 Months A Slave- The Story of Our Anniversary

7 months.

That's 6 more than 1.

We met just before my 29th birthday.  Amanda jokes that she was my best birthday present.  And minus a bottle of 18 year Jameson and the year I got a $25 gift card to Starbucks, she's right.

This lady has stuck by everything.  Where others would have run screaming in the opposite direction, she also ran screaming in the opposite direction... but decided to come back at the last second.

She deals with my being wrong all the time.  My obsession with nerd stuff.  My need to shout at the television at Jeopardy contestants when they mess up answers as if they were Romo in the NFL playoffs and they just threw an interception.

She is the first one who hears the jokes I create before they're made less racist for public viewing.

She suffers through my tangents that will jump from a discussion on fish hatcheries to film theories to the inevitable tie-in to an episode of Smallville.

She's understanding.  Compassionate.  Lovely.  Hilarious.

And even when she's throwing lamps at me for leaving my socks on the floor... or pushing me down the stairs because I left the toothpaste cap off again...

There's a love there that I've never felt.  A foundation of facetious madness, wonderful debates, and never-ending support that I know will last a lifetime.

She's made me into the type of person I can be proud of.  And 37% less socially inept.

Love ya, Harley.  Here's to another 7 months.

Maybe 8.

9 tops.

"She could have used a knife."

After Christy Sheats shot her two daughters, a recurring argument from gun supporters was...

"Don't ban guns.  She could have just used a knife!  They could have been stabbed!"

Yes.  A lot of hypothetical situations could have happened.  But they didn't.

Al Qaeda uses planes and shoes to create terrorist acts and we have tons of security put in place.  Hours of preventative measures... We even take our shoes off.

You know what people DIDN'T say?

"We don't need security because they could have just used knives."

The ability to kill via other means doesn't mean you neglect the way they DID kill.

Journey Parody "Don't Stop Believing"

Saw a shirt that said:

"Just a city girl
Living in the Muggle World
She took the Hogwarts Train
Going Anywhere"

Which inspired this little ditty...

Granger and Weasely

Just a clever girl
Livin' in a Muggle World
She took a magic train and she had frizzy hair
Just a Ginger boy
He was poor, but not the point
He went to Hogwarts with a rat murderer

A hat told them their class and room
They became friends but not this soon
For a while all they did was fight
Her and Ron, and Ron, and Ron, and Ron

[Chorus]

Villain waiting
Turban hiding his Dark Art
These three, and Harry, will fight
Mudbloods, People
Basilisk caused a commotion
An innocent ex con takes flight

At the Yule Ball, Ron's envy filled
He hated Krum and wished him ill
Harry saw Cho with another guy
But soon he'd die
Ron fell hard, Hermione swooned
Taught the D.A. in a secret room
Oh their story never ends
She's with Ron, with Ron, with Ron, with Ron

Granger and Weasley
Their Love Transcends Believing
Married People

Started conceiving
Female Ron
Named Rose Weasley

8 films, Broadway
7 books hold up today
Granger's, black now
Not sure why...

A quick blurb about Sheats

Someone asked me if gun control was enforced, wouldn't criminals still obtain guns?  This was my response.

Every criminal who killed innocent people was an innocent person prior to the act, conception, and meditation.

In a perfect world?  It would be great to have part of the background check be a simple question:

"Are you ever going to murder innocent people?"

And receive complete honesty.

The thing is, Sheats proved something quite disheartening.  Many of the same people killing with guns are the same people who once said they were responsible with them.

Sad when this disturbing headline isn't even the worst one about gun violence this month.

Maybe gun control won't prevent all death by firearms... But if it prevented some?

I'd say it's worth it.

Trump's Hubris: Falling Past Rock Bottom

Donald Trump's inexperience, bigotry, and disparities between what he says he'll do and what he actually does are finally resulting in a sensical downward spiral.

Donald Trump is in trouble.  And all I can say is: "It's about time."

This is a man who was so staunchly supported by Conservative voters that no matter his statements, actions, or hypocrisy... he could bounce back nearly immediately.

This is a man who stated, proudly, that he could shoot a man in public and not lose any voters.  Not only did his supporters all but prove this statement to be true, but this very quote is one of the most glaring indictments of why Trump should never be President...

To explain why I hold this opinion, I must ask you this one question:

Could you see any of our former Presidents saying an iteration of that quote?

Picture Abraham Lincoln saying:  "I am so beloved by my constituents, that my assault upon a man by deadly firearm would not sway their favorable opinion."

Imagine JFK on the campaign trail stating:  "Ask not whether my bullet will kill you, ask whether this will affect you voting for me."

Is this even fathomable?

To think of any of our past, present, or future leaders repeating anything that Donald Trump has said is an exercise in futility.

He has no experience as a politician.  He also has no experience in being a thoughtful or compassionate human being.

The defensive arguments by Trump supporters are interesting convictions when you see what Trump has been saying and/or doing.

One example is those who say:

"Anyone who supports Sanders is a freeloader who just wants free money."

An interesting point... However, let's look at what Trump has done with a large amount of his campaign funds.

With $6 million dollars of the money he has earned to be used towards his campaign, he has essentially funneled this money into his own company.

That is 1/5 of his total campaign funds.

Some of the most interesting ways he has spent the campaign money on himself include:

$420,000 to Mar-a-Lago for parties, $4.6 million to TAG Air, and $5,000 to his son's company Eric Trump Winery Manufacturing LLC.

Interesting to note that he once stated any campaign donations would not be used on himself.

Then again, this is the same man who promised to debate Sanders and donate the money generated to charity, but then went back on his word.  So at this point, being flabbergasted seems a bit blasé.

In Trump's latest speech, he stated that:

“Hillary Clinton gave China millions of our best jobs and effectively let China completely rebuild itself,” he said. “In return, Hillary Clinton got rich!”

This is categorically untrue and a bit ironic... Seeing as hundreds of his products are manufactured in China and other foreign countries.

I have always believed that good begets good and bad begets bad... A basic tenet in most Buddhist philosophies.

Now that Trump is in a tailspin, I can see the validity in this belief.

Trump's supporters will continue to defend every reprehensible thing he says and does until election day.  But at least my fears of this man sitting behind the desk in the Oval Office are finally being laid to rest.

Father's Day 2016

In the 3rd Grade, the students in my class had a school project.  We had to write a paper about who our hero was.

Most of the answers were Batman.

But mine was different (mostly because Batman is kind of lame).

I said my father.

Now, at the age of 29... I realize that answer has never changed.

He has always been one of those individuals you immediately respect.  Not because of his demeanor... and not because he demanded it.

It was earned.  His compassion, his pride, his intelligence, his ethics, and his drive were all evident in everything he did.

In a lot of ways, he WAS like a superhero.  He has always been a pillar of integrity... he puts the welfare of others first... and no matter the obstacle, he always overcomes it.

He's my Dad.

This year I turn 30... and the lessons he has taught me have become the moral compass by which I have guided my own child.

Although serving our country had him away at times, he was still always present in my life and the lives of my siblings.  And though I have my faults, I am proud of the man I am... the son I am... and the father I am.

He has taught me so much... and I know he has so much left to teach.

I love you Dad.  Thank you for showing me how to soldier on, how to live with integrity, and how to be a terrific Dad.

Happy Father's Day.
